Velum Mayilum Sevalum Thunai

Arunagirinathar Says

Perutha paaruleer vaarume neengal vaarume
vandu mayilayum avan thirukkai ayilayum
Avan kadaikan iyalaiyum ninaindirukka vaarume

Yamabhatar thodarndhazhaikkil Avarudan Edirndul utka
Edi ena Muzhangi Vetri pesalaam

Arunagirinathar asks all the people to sing the praise of Maal Marugan. By singing the praise of Maal Marugan, a soul need not fear the Yama Bhataal. When they come a skanda bhaktha can say his name like "IDI"

We read in Shankara Vijayam that Aacharyaal condemned 72 dhurmathams and established shanmathams. The tradition among his followers has been to adher to the path of Dharma while doing Upaasana of any of these deities with ekagratha.

I thought that people doing upaasanaa of these deities can share their experiences. In many of smartha households one member of the family may be doing the upaasanaa of one deity and another member may be doing the upaasanaa of another deity and they share their experience peacefully for Aatma laabham.

I am not much knowledgeable on thiruppughazh. But it is my wish that people who recite Thiruppughzh share their experience. This thread is an effort in that direction

Similarly people doing upasanaa of other deities may share their experiences.

Bhagavatha Amrutham is already there.

Devaram and Divya prabhandam are compiled in under different "Pakaal and pangal" . Thiruppughazh is composed in many "Sevikkiniya Santham"
It is said Shri Arunagirinathar composed about 16000 paadalgal. Today by the efforts of "Adiyaargal" about 1300 paadalgal are traced.

1. There are paadalgal on many kshethrams
2. There are "Viruthams" . Vel virutham; seval virutham; mayil virutham
3. There are many "Vagupuugal" . "Kadaikaniyal vaguppu, Peruththa vachana vagupuu, Devendra sanga vaguppu, u and many more

Thiruppugazh is in the tradition of shanmatham established by "Aachaaryaal".

"Kaithala nirai kani" many of us are knowing.

There are many many songs on "Ganapathi, Lord shiva, Ambaal, Vishnu" while the main deity of the song still remains "Skanda"

This upaasanaa is very simple and compassionate

It is not even expected of a soul to sing thiruppughazh with ragam and thaalam.
The Thiruppughazh sirappu paayiram says that

"Thiruppughazh padippavar manathinil Iruppam"

Even if a soul reads thiruppughzh if one is not able to sing, still Maal marugan loves it.

In the thiruppughzh "Muruga mayura Chevaga" Shri Arunagirinathar sings the krishnaleelas

"Marugan enaamal soozhkolai karudiya mamappadagan
varavidu maayap peymulai parugaamel
varumada yaanai kodavai thirugi vilaavir kaaikani
madukaiyil veezha saadiya sathamaapul"

In the thiruppughazh, "valivaada pithamodu" he says

"Shivamaar thiruppughzhai enu naavinir pugala
Shivagnyaana Siddhi thanai Arulvaaye"

In Devendra Sanga Vaguppu,

"Dharaniyil Araniya" the saint recites the naamams of "Devi"

These are just a "Thivilai in a saagaram"

I request Thiruppughazh Adiyaargal to share the "Thiruppughazh Amuda Suvai". I might have written something with mistakes above. That could be because of my lack of knowledge. I request Adiyaargal to pardon me for that and correct the mistakes.

I request that let Thiruppughazh Amudam be shared here.

"Velum Mayilum Sevalum Thunai"

A series of articles on Ramana Maharishi had appeared in Kalki more than 30 years ago. I vaguely remember reading there that one of his Bhaktas who was devoted to Murugan can recite 10000 of them.

Sukkukku Minjina Marundum Illai. Subrahmanyanukku minjina Deivamamum Illai. meaning There is no medicine better than dried ginger and no god above Subrahmanya. KUTSITA MARAHA KUMARAHA meaning Kumara's beauty despises even Manmatha (Deivathin Kural Vol 7).

Valmiki Ramayana talks about Kumara Sambhava in detail. This proves that Murugan does not belong to only Dravida desam but the entire Aryavarta. Valmiki compares Rama with Skanda.

Sorry Sriman VS for the interruption. I'm eagerly awaiting the discussion on ArunagiriNathar's wonderful composition.

Radhe Krishna,

Radhe Krishna, Abhiramiji,

Maal Marugan would surely fulfill your wish.

In thiruppughazh Arunagirinathan says :

"Yaam Ninaithathum Alikkum Manathaiyum Urukkum
Nisikkaru Arukkum piravaamal

Neruppaiyum Erikkum Poruppaiyum Idikkum
Niraipughazh uraikkum seyal thaarai"

"Adiyavar Icchaiyil Evai Evai Utrana
Avai Tharuvitharul perumaale"

I pray kamakoti peetanivasini to bless our wishes that persons who are reciting thiruppughazh in the way - Smt.Thailaji says like "Kaivalyaika Prayojanam" ; "Naishkarmyamaavishkrutham" - showers the amrutha varsham on Thiruppughazh.

Maal Marugan satisfies the wishes of Adiyaar so that with the fulfilled heart they engage in singing his praises which would ultimately result in Salvation. "Nisikkaru Arukkum piravaamal".

I have missed out "Kandar Anubhuti" and "Kandar Alankaaram" in my last post.

The one aspect which differentiates Thiruppughazh from other Tamizh Granthams is the usage of samskrutha bhasha. Normally tamizh paasurangaal are either devoid of Samskrutha bhasha or take in few samskrutha words. Thiruppughazh is so rich in use of tamizh as well as samskrutha words.

Spread over so many songs, Arunagirinaathar has referred to entire story of Raamaayanam and Mahabharatham. I have seen Thiruppughazh Adiyaargal singing thiruppughazh arranged in such a way that over a period of time, through, thiruppughazh they recite Raamaayanam and Maha Bharatham.

Like his "Maaman", Kandavel is also beauty personified.

I have heard Adiyaargal saying Murugu means Azhagu.

This post I complete with a "Paa" from Alankaaram which says that Maal marugan would protect bhakthaas from the ill effects of "Grahachaaram"

"Naal en seyum vinai thaan en seyum enai naadi vanda
kol enseyum Kodunkootren seyum Kumaresar iru
thaalum silambum sadhangaiyum thandaiyum shanmukhamum
Tholum kadambum enakkumunne vandhu thondridine"

Radhe Krishna
Thandaiyum shanmukamum

Radhe Krishna,

Naathiganni, Radhe Krishna

its not iterruption. Its nice to know about Subrahmanya is referred in puraanaantharam. I am residing in North India. But here also they worship him. May be they are not aware of the name murugan.

In Bengal, during Durga Puja, he is worshipped along with Durga Devi as Karthikeya

In punjab he is worshipped as "Baba Balaknaath"

DDji, beautiful verses from "Kandar Anubhuthi".

The name of Murugan would protect his bhakthaas from paapaas like aagami, santchitam and the "Pannirukaiyon" is always there with his bhakthaas. They are never alone. Arunagirinaathar says :

"Vizhikku Thunai thirumenmalar paadangal
meimai kundra mozhikku thunai muruga enum naamangal
munbu seytha pazhikku thunai avan panniru tholum
Bhayandha thani vazhikku thunai vadivelum sengodan mayuramume"

Although padangal are properly differentiated above, the lines are not properly arranged as per "Paa". Adiyaargal may please pardon the mistake.

Radhe Krishna

Dear all,

For those interested in Lord Muruga, please visit www.Kaumaram.com ... This has a beautiful collection of around 1000 Thiruppugazh songs with meaning in English and tamil and audio. It also has Kanda Shashti Kavacam, Kandar Anubhuti, Subramanya bhujangam and a whole lot of verses with meaning.

I have a request. I want to chant Kavadi Chindu, would really appreciate if somebody can post the lyrics here.

Regards,
Velan

Radhe Krishna,

vaylanji, muktiji, "Velum mayilum sevalum thunai"

Very useful information.

Thiruppugazh is composed totally in compliance with shruthi and smruthi. As such the Bhajanam is also in a purely vaidika paddhathi. Although many adiyaargal follow many paddhathis, the following is one such very similar to the "Vaidika shodachopachaara puja"

And all verses from compositions of "Arunagirinathar"

"Ganapathi Sthuthi"

"Nenjakanakallu neghizhnduruhath
thanjatharul shanmukhanukkiyal ser
senchol punai maalai siranthidave
panchakkara aanai padam panivaam"

"Sankalpam"

"Aadum parivel aniseval enap
paadum paniye paniya arulvai
thedum kayamaa muganaichcheruvil
saadum thaiyaanai sahodarane"

"Guru sthuthi"

"Pachchai maal marugan keerthi pagar thiruppugazhai naalum
ichchaiyaal oodum naavan empiraarkaaviyaagum
ichchaiyaal valli paada irudayan engal aasaan
sachchithanandan paada charaname charan emakke"

Before continuing the puja, while discussing about "Thiruppugazh" one can not proceed further without paying obeisances to the contributions of "Vallimalai Sacchithananda Swamigal" - "Bayilvaan thiruppugazh payilvaan".

Shri Sacchithaananda swamigal lived during the same time when Shri Seshadhri Swamigal and Ramana Maharishi lived. Although he was from Karnatakam, it was Maalmarugan's Sankalpam that he came to Tamizhnaadu and learnt thiruppugazh and dedicated his life for the same.

The puja continues

Radhe Krishna,

Velum Mayilum Sevalum thunai
The Yathoktha pooja continues with

"PUSHPA ALANKARAM"

Henceforth a Ragam and thalam is also suggested for the thiruppugazh. It may kindly be noted what is given is only the suggested Raagam and thaalam. Like "Gopalam mama jeevanam" there are dedicated Murugan Adiyaar who have composed "Thriuppugazh Madani" and their jeevanam is thiruppugazh. Whatever "Murugan Adiyar" stands above whatever is written here.

Whatever pushpa alankaram would be beautiful for "Deva Senapathi" than a "pushpa maalaa" which is made with the thread of love out of "Hrudaya kamala padmam". Arunagirinathar submits such a wonderful maanasika pushpamaalaa called "Mathrukaa pushpa maalaa"

The Thiruppugazh is written in a way which is supposed to be sung by properly splitting and joining words. Effort is made as such. Mistake if any may be forgiven by Adiyaargal.

Ragam : Hindolam
Thalam : Aadi

"Aasaikoor padmanen manopadmam
Aanapoo vaithu naduve

Anbana noolittu navile chithram
Aagave katti oru Gnyana

Gnyana vasam veesi prakaasiyaa nirpa
maasil or bhudhi alipaada

Mathrukaa pushpa maalai kolapra
Vaalapaadathil ANiveno

Moosu gaanathu meedhu vaazh muktha
mooral vedichi thanabaara

Moozhghu neebapra thaabamaar patha!
moori vezhathin mayil vaazhve

Veesumeenappa yodhi vaai *beep*
vegavedhithu varumaasoor

Veezhamodhipparaarai naagathu
veeravel thotta perumaale"

Vetri veera vel thotta perumaalukku - Haraharohara

Thiruppugazh, Raamayanam , Shrimad Bhagavatham , Bhagavath Geetha and many such granthams are read by people for two purposes. Vidwath and Bhakthi. Those who read the granthams for vidwath try to know the meaning of granthams and those who read the granthams for bhakthi just recite them crying to their lords that they may be blessed by their lord at some point of time in their life time to be blessed with the bhavam behind atleast a single shabdha in the whole grantham where their mind would get bound in the lotus feet of their lord.

Ofcourse to read the grantham in the first way would eventually lead to read the same in the second way.

Aavaahanam, Abhishekam, Pushpa Alankaaram - After all these are completed we go to do the Archanam. See how many times we do namaskaarams to the “Naada vindu kalaadhi prabhu”. When people sings very well, in Tamil Nadu, we use to say that he should have done Abhishekam to murugan in janmaantharam with “Paal and Then” - Milk and honey. May be that’s why Arunagirinathar starts the Archanam with “Nada vindu kalaadhi”.

Archanai

Raagam : Senchurutti
Thalam : Aadi

Naada vindu kalaadhi namo nama
Veda manthra sorupa namo nama
Gnyana panditha swami namo nama Vegukoti

Naama sambu kumaara namo nama
Bhoga andari balaa namo nama

Eeramum guru seerpaada sevaiyum maravaada
Maravaada arulthaaraai

Arulthaarai Aavinan kudi vaazhvaana devargal perumaale

Aavinan kudi vaazhvaana devargal perumalukku – Haraharohara

In Shrimad Bhagavatham, Bhagavan says :

“Skandoham sarvasenanyaam”

Subhramanyaa is hailed as “Deva Senapathi”

Here Arunagirinathar prostrates to the “Deva kunjari balan” hailing him as “Dheera samprama veeraa”

It would not be out of place to remember here that periavaa has ordained the bhakthaas to recite “Subhramanya Bhujangam” composed by Aachaaryaal.

The name of “Murugan” is associated with “Vetri” – “Success”.

That’s why we do the jaya gosham “Vetri vel murugankku” – Haraharohara.

I read in the forum that Shri.V.K.Ram, the aged bhaktha of the forum, is going on an Individual battle against injustice. I pray “Devasenapathi” to be in the mind and words of Shri.V.K.Ram to bring Success to his untiring efforts.

ROGA NIVRUTHI - NOYATRA VAAZHVU

In yathoktha vaidika puja, after doopa deepadi neivedya Karpoora Harathi, Pradakshina namaskaram is submitted after praying for manokaamanaas. Although every kalpa puja is performed with the sankalpam “Eshwara preethyartham”, the sankalpam is added with “Aayuhu, aarogya, aishwarya abhivrudyartham” “Ishta kamyartha sidyartham”.

Now, a question may arise, as to whether one should submit prayers to God requesting him to bless a soul with Dheerga Aayu, aarogyam, aishwaryam, sath santhanam et al.

It depends on the adhikari who submits the prayer.

When Aacharyaal was placed on Bali peetam by kaapalikaas he just watched the events with out any dwandam. But nrusimha bhagawan did not simply watch the events but acted upon.

When Jada bharatha was placed on Bali peetam by kaapalikaas he did not react but bhadrakali appeared from the statue and smashed the heads of kaapaalikaas.

When Dhruva was humiliated by his father and step mother, he went to do thapas for thaapa Samanam.

When Bhaktha prahlaada was subjected to cruel punishments he did not suffer since he saw the entire world as “Sarvam Vishnu Mayam jagat”. Since he had the anubhuthi, the visham, agni, parvatha shikaram, paathalam everything was not as they were but Bhagawan Vishnu. Prahlaada says that a person offering devotional service in anticipation of material benefits is like a merchant.

And here Kunthi who says

“Vipathaha santhu nassaswath thathra thathra jagadguro
Bhavatho darshanam yatsyat apunarbhava darshanam”

Kunthi prays that she may be blessed with calamities so that she would get darshanam of Bhagawan (Keshavam klesha naashanam) which would provide salvation to her from the vicious cycle of birth and death. (Apunarbhavam)

Kaalia patni and Vruthrasura says :

“Na yogasiddherapunarbhavam va”

We do not want Yoga siddhi and not even liberation from vicious cycle of Birth and death

But Bhagawan says :

“Akaama sarvakamo vaa moksha kaama udaaradheehi
Bhagavathyachalo bhavo yad bhagavatha sangathaha”

An Intelligent person is one who does bhakthi to me whether he has no desires or has lots of desires or is desirous of salvation.

Bhagawan is sung as Aarthiharan.

Praying Valli Manavaalan as :

“Adiyavar Ichchaiyil yevai yevai utrana avai tharu vitharul perumaale”

The prarathanaa submitted at the lotus feet of “Panniru Karathan” for “Roga nivruthi” – “Noyatra vaazhvu” – is given below in the thiruppugazh.

KURAIVATRA SELVAM – DHANA SAMRUDHI

Raagam : Huseni
Thalam : Chapu

The tamizh proverb says that “Noyatra vaazhve kuraivatra selvam”. When “Kumbamuni kumbidum thambiran” blesses his adiyaar with “Noyatra vaazhvu”, “Kuraivatra selvam” is that which naturally follows.

Shreer me Bhajathu
Alakshmeer me nashyathu

Thus prays vedaas.

Here Arunagirinaathar prays that he may be blessed with a sharp mind, strong panchendriyaas, Dharanaa shakthi apart from “thandigai ganappavusu”. The status of sitting in a palanquin with respect meant for a dhanika.

Devotees are wrting Tamil in transliteration mode in English hoping that the text can be followed by those who don't know Tamil script. The section which can follow Tamil Poetry without knowing even the script is very small if not nil. It is suggested that such poems can be typed in Tamil to make people enjoy it better than in transliteration script. It is also difficult to follow the transliteration as compared to Tamil script. For information of all there is a software free download available at www.baraha.com which can write in Tamil, Kanada, Telugu, Hindi or Sanskrit or any other Indian language in unicode.

Priya Srimaan Varadharaja Sharmaji

Namaste. On receiving the mail enquiry through Shri Adminji I am trying with mails but got non-delivery notices both times.

About the posting problems in Tamizh:

If the problem is in copying and pasting, try typing directly in the KF’s post your reply window.

The problem could be in fonts. If so, you may download fonts like sanakrit2003, TSC_Sri and install them through Control Panel -> Fonts -> File -> Install new font command.

If the problem is with BarahaIME 1.0 installation then download fresh and reinstall.

Hope & Wish to see divya thirupugazh in Murugu Tamizh.

I am able to type out in Baraha. But not able to copy and paste. Windows ME is installed in my PC. To be frank, my computer literacy is minimal. I again contacted adminji with a different mail ID. may be in a couple of mails you could be able to explain me the way.

Dear Varadaraja Sharmaji,

I tried one small sentance and i was successful which I reproduce below:

vElum mayilum sEvalum thuNai ( Tamil transliteration in English )

வேலும் மயிலும் சேவலும் துணை ( Tamil )

The process is simple. Once you type the Tamiltransliteration in English at the bottom window of Baraha Software and click the convert symbol ( the fourteenth from left and next to printer symbol ) the Tamil transliteration is converted to Tamil in the upper window. Verify that the text is correct and there are no mistakes and then click the quick convert button (which is the fifth button from the left and is in blue). The message on the top window gets converted to html format and displays on the screen. Now cut and paste this to your Kanchi Forum reply and you get what you want.

Hope I have explasined it properly and you get it right now.

Shri Varadaraja Sharmaji,

I shall only be too happy to serve you or for that matter any member of the Forum. When I tried the blue button called quick export I could see the text in htm format. However, You can click the third button ( before the blue ) which is meant for export and it throws up several choices of formats to save. You can choose either rich text format ( ANSI) or html type and you can save the text in a file. This can be easily copied and pasted. I tired these two formats and they worked for me. Hope it works for you too.

One correction please. After you select any one of the two formats click on apply and later click on OK this will ask you to give a file name and then it can be saved in any drive of your choice and name of your choice

வேலும் மயிலும் சேவலும் துணை

The last post on thiruppugazh was on “Noyatra vaazhvu”; “Kuraivatra Selvam”. Before continuing the same, to bridge the gap, below is given a beautiful bhavamaya sthuthi in simple tamizh.

As the popular tamizh proverb goes, “Kuzhandaiyum deivamum kondadum idathile”, Bhagavan presents himself wherever his praises are sung.

That is what Bhagawan says to Narada :

“Naaham vasaami vaikunte na yogi hrudaye ravau
madh bhakthahaa yathra gaayanthi thathra thishtaami naarada”

if that being the case, if the praises of “Balasubramanya swami”are sung and if the songs are those of “Arunagirinathar”, how “Engal Pazhanimevu perumaL” presents himself is narrated in the following sthuthi in simple tamizh.

Dear Sri Varadaraja Sharma

Now when we read Thiruppugazh in Tamil, it is a double pleasure,

முயற்சி திருவினை ஆக்கும் என்பது சரியே - தங்கள் திருப்புகழ்
முயற்சி பலர்வினை போக்கும் என்பது திண்ணம்.

Sometime ago you had stated that some more Thirupugazh treaure had been unearthed somewhere and that you would post them once you get them.

Any luck that we may enjoy the unlocked treasure?

Dear Forum admin

Obviously since it had been quite some time since I had last logged in my previous post shows as if it is from guest. My understanding is that this forum previously had no facility to post as guest. Now it happens so. Can you please look at.
